Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has shared how losing his mother at the age of 13 changed the course of his life.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, Portable said his mother’s death forced him to grow up quickly and learn how to survive on his own. He explained that although other people were around to help him, none could care for him the way his mother did.

According to the singer, life on the streets taught him valuable lessons that he believes he could not have learned in school.

“I lost my mother when I was 13. There were people around me, but they could not take care of me the way my mother would have,” he said.

Portable recalled that his mother used to provide him with food and pocket money while she was alive. After her death, he had to find ways to support himself.
He revealed that he started selling sachet water in his community to earn money and survive.

“My mother used to give me food and pocket money. After she died, I began selling pure water to take care of myself,” he said.

The singer said the experience shaped his life and taught him important lessons about hard work and survival.
