Nigeria has officially emerged as Africa’s highest-ranked nation in the latest Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI), securing the 38th position globally. This represents a massive leap of 42 places over the last two years, overtaking other regional giants like Egypt and South Africa.
The ranking, published by the Cape Town-based Global Center on AI Governance, evaluates countries on metrics like ethics, inclusion, trust, and labor skills. Scoring 45.93, Nigeria significantly outperformed the African regional average of 21.79.
Notably, the report crowned Nigeria a global “Bright Spot” for its balanced approach to technology. Pioneering initiatives like the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program and the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS) were highly praised for expanding AI literacy nationwide. At the same time, strong regulatory policies like the Nigeria Data Protection Act ensure that children and vulnerable groups remain protected from potential AI-related harms.
This milestone cements Nigeria’s position as a dominant force in ethical digital transformation. It proves to global investors that the country is actively shaping how emerging technologies are responsibly governed and deployed.
