ABUJA: Former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, has hinted of a possible foray into politics, even as he commended the Federal Capital Territory FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, for what he described as a raised bar for purposeful governance in Abuja.
The decorated ex-footballer made the revelations while observing the ongoing landmark project commissionings across the FCT.
Responding to questions on whether his constant presence at high-profile governance events signalled an interest in running for political office, the athlete said; “You can never truly tell what will happen; the future is always in God’s hands. As for whether I will join politics, you can never say never,” Yobo stated.
Reflecting on a career spent representing Nigeria on the global stage, the former national team captain emphasised that leadership is not an unfamiliar territory to him. “I am a sports person, but of course, I have lived most of my life abroad, served as the captain of the Nigerian national team, and held leadership roles before,” he noted.
He explained that his interest in politics stemmed from a natural understanding of how policy affects everyday citizens. “I am naturally interested because politics and governance shape our daily lives. You just never know what the future holds. When the time is right, God will decide,” he said.
For now, the ex-footballer said his public engagements remained centred on celebrating the rapid urban renewal of the nation’s capital under Wike, describing the minister as his former governor and stressing that his presence at the commissionings was about joining millions of Nigerians to witness the structural transformation firsthand.
