Fresh indications of possible political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition camp emerged on Friday as the presidential candidate of the Accord Party, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, received his Social Democratic Party (SDP) counterpart, Prince Adewole Adebayo, in Abuja.
The meeting comes amid a series of consultations involving opposition political figures ahead of the 2027 general election.
The latest engagement also follows reports of ongoing consultations between Hashim and the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, fuelling speculation over possible collaboration among opposition leaders ahead of the polls.
Sources familiar with the discussions said the consultations are focused on issues relating to Nigeria’s democracy, electoral reforms and the future of opposition politics.
Although details of the talks were not made public, the sources said discussions have centred on possible areas of cooperation among opposition political leaders and other pro-democracy stakeholders.
The meeting comes months after the launch of the Movement for Democratic Renewal (MDR), a platform involving Hashim and leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Sources further disclosed that consultations with other opposition presidential candidates and civil society stakeholders are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
Neither Hashim nor Adebayo issued an official statement on the outcome of Friday’s meeting as of the time of filing this report.
