Wife of the president and Nigeria’s first lady, Oluremi Tinubu has called for improved mental health and healthcare support for wives of police officers, saying their resilience and sacrifices are critical to the effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force and the nation’s security.
Represented by the wife of the minister of defence, Lilian Oghogho-Musa, at the opening of the three-day 2026 Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) National Convention in Abuja, Tinubu said police wives shoulder enormous responsibilities at home while their husbands serve under demanding and often dangerous conditions.
She stressed that the emotional wellbeing of police families must be prioritised, noting that stronger support systems would not only improve family stability but also enhance the performance of officers in the line of duty.
Speaking on the convention’s theme, “The Resilient Woman: Navigating Life’s Challenges with Strength, Purpose and Grace,” Tinubu urged participants to use the gathering to build lasting relationships, acquire new skills and draw strength from one another’s experiences.
She maintained that empowering women translates into stronger families and healthier communities, describing resilient women as the bedrock of resilient societies.
In her remarks, the national president of POWA, Mutiat Olufunmilola-Disu, unveiled an expanded welfare programme focused on improving the quality of life of police families through enhanced healthcare, mental wellness services, education, economic empowerment, and sustained support for widows and children of fallen police officers.
She said the association would continue to roll out practical initiatives aimed at addressing the everyday challenges confronting police families while promoting self-reliance, dignity and social inclusion.

Also speaking, the inspector-general of police, IGP Olatunji Disu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to improving the welfare of officers and their families through greater investment in education, healthcare, skills acquisition, women empowerment and social development.
HELe commended POWA for its humanitarian interventions, particularly its support for widows, children of deceased officers and other vulnerable families, describing the association as a key partner in advancing the Force’s welfare agenda.
Disu urged members to continue promoting integrity, compassion and unity, stressing that stronger police families are indispensable to building a motivated police force capable of delivering safer and more secure communities across Nigeria.
