The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, and the Queen Consort, Olori Atuwatse III, have unveiled a cultural initiative aimed at strengthening the identity, unity and global visibility of the Itsekiri people.
The initiative, known as “I Am Itsekiri,” will be launched under the authority of the Palace of the Warri Kingdom and seeks to connect Itsekiri people at home and in the diaspora through a digital platform and media campaign.
Speaking on the project, the monarch said the initiative is intended to deepen cultural pride and foster a stronger sense of belonging among Itsekiris while welcoming friends of the kingdom who identify with its values.
He explained that the movement is built around the belief that the name Itsekiri signifies blessing and that the platform would serve as a rallying point for members of the community worldwide.
According to the palace, the initiative will bring together people of Itsekiri origin, those who became part of the community through marriage and others who share an affinity with the culture.
A dedicated mobile application will provide users with access to updates from the palace, cultural information, language resources and opportunities to connect with fellow Itsekiris across the world.
The palace also announced the #IAmItsekiri Challenge, a social media campaign encouraging participants to share stories and experiences that reflect the values and heritage of the Itsekiri people.
The Olu of Warri described the initiative as a long-term strategy to preserve the kingdom’s cultural heritage, strengthen community bonds and promote Itsekiri identity globally.
