Zelensky, World Leaders Congratulate Andy Burnham After Becoming UK Prime Minister

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several world leaders have congratulated Andy Burnham following his appointment as the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister, while reaffirming their commitment to strengthening ties with Britain.

Earlier, Burnham had said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would be among the first world leaders he would contact after taking office, stressing that there would be “no change” in Britain’s support for Ukraine.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy congratulated Burnham and expressed optimism about working closely with the new British leader.

“Congratulations to Andy Burnham @andyburnham on taking office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. We wish the Prime Minister and the British people every success in addressing the challenges of today.

“Britain has always been one of the global leaders. We are ready to work together in all possible formats. We highly appreciate the UK’s political, defense, and values-based support. The foundation of our bilateral relationship is stronger than ever, and we will continue to make each other stronger. I’m looking forward to our conversation later today. Thank you!” Zelenskyy wrote.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also welcomed Burnham’s appointment, describing Australia and the United Kingdom as longstanding allies with shared values.

“Congratulations Prime Minister Burnham on your appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

“Australia and the United Kingdom are longstanding friends, allies and partners, united by shared values and deep ties between our peoples.

“I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and promote security, resilience and prosperity in the years ahead,” Albanese said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen similarly extended her congratulations, expressing hope for closer cooperation between the European Union and the United Kingdom.

“Congratulations, dear @andyburnham, on your confirmation as Prime Minister.

“I look forward to working with you to strengthen the EU-UK partnership.

“For the security of our shared continent.

“And the prosperity of people on both sides of the Channel,” she wrote.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen paid tribute to former Prime Minister Keir Starmer while welcoming Burnham to office.

“Thank you, Keir – dear friend – for our close cooperation & your tireless efforts on Ukraine & European security over the past years. Also, a warm welcome to Andy Burnham. I look forward to our cooperation & continuing the close partnership between our countries,” Frederiksen said.
