The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate demolition of a two-storey building in the Oke-Suna area of Ilorin East Local Government Area, declaring it structurally unsafe and a serious threat to lives and property.
Acting through the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), the government sealed the premises following several complaints from residents who feared the building was at risk of imminent collapse.
This was contained in a statement issued by KWEPA’s Press Secretary, Aliyu Amode, who said the enforcement action was prompted by distress reports from the community.
According to the KWEPA, “the agency conducted an emergency inspection to avert a potential disaster, during which an elderly resident told KWEPA officials that the community had repeatedly alerted the property owner to the deteriorating condition of the building.
“However, the owner allegedly ignored multiple warnings and appeals to carry out the necessary structural remedial work,” Amode noted.

The General Manager of KWEPA, Jide Aina, described the building as a grave threat to public safety and directed the owner to begin its immediate demolition.
“The condition of the building constitutes a grave danger to public safety. The owner is hereby directed to commence its immediate demolition,” Aina said.
He added, “Failure to comply with this directive will leave the Kwara State Government with no option but to demolish the structure in the interest of protecting lives and property.”
Aina reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to safeguarding residents through proactive environmental enforcement, strict compliance with urban safety regulations, and the timely removal of hazards capable of causing avoidable tragedies.
He also urged residents to continue supporting government efforts by promptly reporting abandoned buildings, distressed structures, and other environmental hazards to KWEPA for appropriate intervention.
