Why We’re Building Research On Parliamentary Reforms Globally – Pelizzo

Political scientist, Prof. Riccardo Pelizzo, has explained that his research is driven by a commitment to strengthening parliamentary institutions and improve democratic governance through evidence-based reforms globally.

At the conference in Abuja yesterday, Pelizzo’s said his work had increasingly shaped discussions on parliamentary reforms, legislative oversight, anti-corruption measures and institutional accountability in several countries, with governments and international development organisations drawing on them to improve governance systems.

He said his studies had been referenced in efforts to strengthen parliamentary accountability in The Philippines, where lawmakers considered his findings during legislative deliberations on improving oversight of government activities and public expenditure.

Pellizzo added that he had made notable contributions to anti-corruption reforms. In collaboration with the World Bank, he co-authored “The Role of Parliament in Curbing Corruption”, a study examining how legislatures can promote transparency and accountability through effective oversight, he said.

The research has been cited in discussions that contributed to parliamentary reforms in Tanzania aimed at strengthening institutional mechanisms for combating corruption.

His scholarship has further informed constitutional and legislative reform processes in Kazakhstan and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Kazakhstan, his studies on governance and parliamentary institutions formed part of broader policy discussions on constitutional reforms, while in Bosnia and Herzegovina, his research on legislative oversight was referenced during deliberations on parliamentary legislation.

Beyond national reforms, Pelizzo’s research has contributed to the work of international organisations involved in governance and public sector reform. Through collaborations with the World Bank and other development institutions, his studies have addressed democratic governance, legislative performance, public administration, and institutional accountability.

An accomplished academic, Professor Pelizzo has published more than 260 scholarly works covering political science, public policy, governance, comparative politics, corruption, democratic institutions, legislative studies, and public administration.

His publications have been translated into Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Kazakh, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese, broadening their impact among researchers, policymakers, and public institutions worldwide.

In addition to his work on governance, Pelizzo has contributed extensively to higher education and research management. His publications on academic supervision, research leadership, and university governance have been used by scholars and academic institutions, particularly in Central Asia, to strengthen postgraduate education and research capacity.

His contributions to political science and governance have earned him several international honours, including the Vincent Wright Memorial Award, the Politics & Policy Distinguished Reviewer Award, and the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.

Speaking on the motivation behind his work, Pelizzo said his research is aimed at providing practical solutions that help strengthen legislative institutions, improve public accountability, and support democratic reforms globally.

He noted that by producing evidence-based research, he hopes to assist policymakers, lawmakers, and development partners in building more effective, transparent, and accountable parliamentary systems capable of delivering better governance and public service outcomes.
