Firm Seeks Govt Backing To Take Nigerian Beauty Brands Global

The founder of Majestic Fragrance, Jonathan Peace, has called for greater government support for Nigeria’s indigenous fragrance and cosmetics industry, saying improved access to production materials, export opportunities, and financing would enable local brands to compete globally.

Peace made the call over the weekend during the official opening of the company’s fragrance studio in Abuja. She noted that although Nigeria’s cosmetics market is expanding, local manufacturers still face significant challenges, particularly in sourcing raw materials and competing with imported products.

Peace urged the government to reduce import duties on essential production materials, improve access to funding for small businesses, and create opportunities for Nigerian-made products to access international markets.

She also called for a change in public perception, stressing that locally made fragrances can meet international quality standards despite the misconception that Nigerian products should always be cheaper.

She said the business, which has operated for more than six years, was established to go beyond conventional perfume retail by creating an immersive fragrance experience where customers can explore scents, create personalised perfumes, and enjoy a relaxing environment.

Peace added that the newly opened studio would serve as a destination where customers can create their own fragrances, explore exclusive collections, and participate in conversations centred on wellness, lifestyle, and personal care.

Also speaking, an associate at Majestic Fragrance, Jennifer Ibrahim, advised consumers to prioritise natural and authentic fragrances, warning that products containing harsh chemicals could have adverse effects on the skin.

Ibrahim encouraged consumers to avoid excessively harsh perfumes and to exercise caution when applying alcohol-based perfumes directly to sensitive areas of the body, such as the wrists and neck.

She also appealed for stronger collaboration between government agencies and indigenous beauty businesses through awareness campaigns and policies that would encourage the growth of locally owned brands.
