The national leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dissolved the party’s executive committee in Kano State and inaugurated a caretaker committee to administer its affairs pending the emergence of a new leadership.
The decision was announced on Monday in Kano by the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North-West), Najaatu Mohammed, during a press briefing held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre.
Mohammed explained that the move was taken in accordance with the provisions of the party’s constitution and relevant electoral laws, describing it as a necessary step to safeguard the party’s stability and ensure continuity of its activities in the state.
“This important action is not out of preference but out of constitutional duty. Every action taken has been guided by the constitution of our party, the Electoral Act and our collective responsibility to protect the future of the ADC in Kano State.
“Our constitution exists precisely for moments such as this. It provides a lawful path to restore stability, preserve continuity and ensure that the affairs of the party continue uninterrupted,” she said.
She maintained that the intervention by the party’s national leadership was aimed at preserving institutional order and preventing a leadership vacuum that could undermine the party’s operations in Kano.
According to Mohammed, the dissolution of the state executive reflects the party’s commitment to constitutional governance and internal discipline.
“When circumstances create a leadership vacuum within any political organisation, responsible leadership cannot fold its arms and watch uncertainty consume the institution. A political party is built on order, discipline and continuity. Without those pillars, confusion replaces organisation and uncertainty replaces confidence,” she said.
The ADC chieftain, however, appealed to members not to view the caretaker arrangement as a verdict on the performance or loyalty of party faithful in the state.
She stressed that the transition was purely an administrative measure designed to reposition the party and not a reflection of dissatisfaction with its grassroots supporters.
“The constitution of a caretaker committee must never be interpreted as a judgment on the commitment, loyalty or contributions of the thousands of faithful members of our party across Kano State.
“Far from it. Our members remain the greatest strength of this party.”
Mohammed praised party members for their dedication over the years, noting that many had invested significant time, personal resources and political capital to establish and sustain the ADC across Kano State, even during periods when doing so offered little political advantage.
She urged stakeholders, supporters and members to rally behind the caretaker committee to ensure a smooth transition and strengthen the party ahead of future political activities.
“If we remain faithful to our constitution and our democratic ideals, the future of the African Democratic Congress in Kano State will be stronger than ever before,” she added.
Following the dissolution of the state executive, the party announced the appointment of a caretaker committee headed by Alhaji Umar Bala as chairman, while Isma’il Musa will serve as secretary, with responsibility for managing the affairs of the ADC in Kano State until a substantive executive is constituted.
