The 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State, Mallam Sa’idu Umar Ubandoma, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ubandoma was received into the APC by the party’s leader in Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, at his residence in Asokoro, Abuja.
His defection was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by Bashar Abubakar, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Senator Wamakko.
Speaking on his decision to leave the PDP, Ubandoma said he was influenced by the leadership style of Senator Wamakko and the performance of Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
According to him, “I was inspired by the quality of leadership and political maturity demonstrated by Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, as well as the remarkable performance of Governor Ahmed Aliyu in delivering people-oriented projects across Sokoto State.”
Ubandoma added that the government’s performance had strengthened his belief that the APC is committed to the continued growth and development of the state.
Welcoming the former PDP governorship candidate into the party, Senator Wamakko described the defection as a major boost for the APC.
He said the decision by Ubandoma to join the ruling party reflected the growing confidence that political leaders continue to have in the APC’s leadership and development agenda.
Wamakko assured the new member and his supporters of equal treatment and respect within the party.
He stressed that the APC remains open to all well-meaning citizens who are committed to promoting unity, peace and sustainable development in Sokoto State.
Recall that in March, Saidu Umar, defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Ubandoma, is regarded as a key political figure who previously served as Commissioner for Finance and later as Secretary to the Sokoto State Government under the Tambuwal administration.
He was also the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2023 general election.
