Football’s global governing body, FIFA, has launched an official investigation into an incident of alleged racial abuse directed at popular internet streamer IShowSpeed during a World Cup match.
The incident took place on July 3 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami during the Round of 32 match between Argentina and Cape Verde. The 21-year-old American streamer, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., was broadcasting live to his millions of followers from the stands when the alleged abuse occurred.
FIFA confirmed it began reviewing the matter after the incident was captured on the live broadcast. In an official statement, the organization reiterated its strict stance against discrimination, stating that the tournament is built on unity, diversity, and respect.
Watkins Jr. has been a prominent figure throughout the tournament, broadcasting from various matches and featuring high-profile guests, including football players and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He is well-known globally for his high-energy content and his public support of Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
