The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Ogun State for the 2027 election and Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, has flagged off the re-electrification of more than 50 communities in Ogun Waterside and Ijebu East Local Government Areas, promising to restore power to areas that have remained in darkness for over a decade.
Senator Adeola launched the project on Tuesday during a town hall meeting with traditional rulers, religious and community leaders, youth representatives and other stakeholders in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
The intervention will restore electricity to communities including Onikintimbo, Gbegude, Olorunsogo, Malofe, Itebu-Manuwa, Mile 3, Mile 4, Igede, Oni, Alo, Olojumeta, Ibiade, Agodo, Tigara, Igbafo, Ilushin, Agbure, Efire, Lomiro, Obu, Ayede, Abigi, Ayila, Ita Ogun, Ita Otu, Makun Omi, Igbo Edu, Ode Omi and Awodikora, among others.
Accompanied by the APC Deputy Governorship candidate, Mrs. Abiodun Adegunwa-Balogun, Senator Adeola said the project was aimed at restoring hope to residents whose economic and social activities had suffered following years of blackout caused by the vandalisation of critical electricity infrastructure.
“This project represents our commitment to improving the lives of our people. Electricity is fundamental to economic growth, education, healthcare and security. We cannot stand by while communities remain in darkness for years. Today, we are taking another practical step towards restoring power, reviving businesses, and improving the standard of living of our people. I therefore call on the community leaders and everyone in the environment where the cables pass through to forge a 24-hour security surveillance to guide this project against vandals,” he said.
The senator disclosed that contractors had already been mobilised and expressed confidence that the project would be completed by December 2026.
He explained that the intervention fulfils a promise he made during a recent consultative visit to Ogun Waterside, where residents lamented the impact of prolonged power outages. According to him, the project is being funded from his personal resources.
Senator Adeola also announced plans to construct a large solar-powered market in Ogun Waterside to enable evening trading and stimulate economic activities. He said construction would commence within the next two weeks.
