Wolfsburg Confirm Eriksen Will Rehab In Denmark After Collapse

Christian Eriksen will begin individual rehabilitation in Denmark after collapsing during a friendly match against Ukraine last month, his club Wolfsburg has confirmed.

The 34-year-old midfielder collapsed in Odense in June, with the game stopped in the 65th minute and abandoned shortly after.

He was able to walk from the field and later said he was “doing well” and recovering at home with his family.

Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021, was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) following that incident.

After last month’s collapse, he explained that his ICD “did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it,” adding that it was “a different situation from what happened in 2021.”

Wolfsburg confirmed that Eriksen will “shortly begin an individual rehabilitation programme” and that, following discussions with managing director Dieter Hecking, it was decided the 34-year-old will complete it in his native Denmark.

The club added that they remain in regular contact with Eriksen and the doctors overseeing his treatment.

Eriksen was unable to play for Inter Milan after his initial cardiac arrest due to Italian rules prohibiting players with ICDs from competing, but he resumed his career with Brentford in 2022 — eight months after his first on-pitch incident.

He spent three years with Manchester United before joining Wolfsburg in September 2025, with both the Premier League and Bundesliga allowing players with ICDs to compete.

An ICD is a device about half the size of a mobile phone with thin wires leading to the area around the heart. It acts as a mini defibrillator and can also send regular electrical signals if it detects the heart is beating too slowly.
