300-Level UI Law Student Regains Freedom After 16 Days In Captivity

A 300-level law student of the University of Ibadan (UI), Tomisin Abolarin, who was abducted in June after attending a religious fellowship, has regained her freedom after spending 16 days in captivity.

The development was confirmed by the leadership of the UI Scripture Union, which disclosed that Tomisin and other victims were released on Sunday night.

The President of UI Students’ Union, Comrade Temidayo Adeboye, also confirmed her release in a statement issued on Monday, assuring members of the university community that Tomisin would soon be reunited with her family and return to campus.

“We have been assured that our student will safely return to the university community soon,” the Students’ Union president said, adding that Tomisin is expected back on campus on Thursday.

He expressed appreciation to security agencies, the institution’s management, the leadership of the Scripture Union, and everyone who contributed in various ways to securing the victims’ release.

Tomisin’s release brings to an end weeks of anxiety within the UI community following news of her abduction in June.

She was kidnapped while travelling to attend a religious programme organised by the Scripture Union in Okigwe, Imo State. Concerns over her whereabouts intensified after she could no longer be reached, prompting the UI Students’ Union to issue a public statement confirming her abduction.

The incident sparked widespread concern among students, alumni, civil society organisations, and members of the public, with many calling for intensified efforts by security agencies to secure her release.

Prayer sessions and advocacy campaigns were also organised as the university community rallied support for her safe return.

Although details surrounding her release have yet to be made public, news of her freedom has been greeted with relief and celebration across the university community.

Her return is expected to bring comfort to her family, friends, colleagues, and the wider UI community, who have followed the case closely since news of her disappearance emerged.
