1 Dead, Over 30 Missing In Jigawa Canoe Accident

One person has been confirmed dead, and more than 30 others are reported missing as rescue operations continue following a canoe accident in the Malamawar Yan Dutse community, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening when the canoe, carrying farmers and labourers, including women was returning from the farm to their village.

According to source from the village, there was over 40 passengers on the boat when the accident happend.

Confirming the accident, the Director of Planning at the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) stated that rescue efforts are currently ongoing in collaboration with local divers, SEMA officials, and other relevant agencies.

“All hands are on deck as combined efforts continue to determine the exact number of those rescued or still missing,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Ringim Local Government Emergency Management Committee, Malam Habibu Dauda, appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information until an official update is provided by the relevant authorities.
