US President Donald Trump has claimed the United States “gave Iran a week off” during the ongoing tensions with Tehran, making the remark during a patriotic address at Mount Rushmore as America marked preparations for its 250th Independence Day celebrations.
Trump made the comment while referencing the situation surrounding Iran’s leadership and the ongoing regional conflict, saying: “We gave him a week off because we’re nice,” in a speech delivered to a large crowd at the South Dakota landmark.
His remarks came as Iran continued six days of funeral ceremonies for its late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with state media reporting large-scale national mourning events across Tehran and other cities.
The Iranian ceremonies have drawn thousands of mourners, with authorities projecting attendance figures as high as 15 to 20 million people over the course of the events, alongside tightly controlled security arrangements and political messaging.
Trump, speaking at Mount Rushmore during the America 250 celebrations, also focused heavily on American identity and power, describing the United States as “the most powerful country on Earth” and “the most successful, most accomplished nation ever to exist.”
The speech included brief references to foreign policy tensions, though most of the address centred on national pride, historical milestones and upcoming Independence Day festivities.
Iranian officials, meanwhile, continue to oversee the multi-day state funeral processions for Khamenei, which include planned movements of the coffin through Tehran, Qom and other regional religious centres.
