The Jigawa State Executive Council has approved an upward review of the minimum monthly pension for retirees under the State and Local Government Contributory Pension Scheme from N12,000 to N20,000, effective from July 1, 2026.
This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Information, Youth, Support and Culture, Hon. Sagir Musa Ahmad, while briefing journalists on the outcome of the council meeting.
He said the decision was reached at the State Executive Council meeting held on Monday and chaired by Governor Umar A. Namadi.
Ahmad explained that the council also approved an additional N2.068 billion in annual expenditure for the State and Local Government Contributory Pension Scheme to support the implementation of the new pension rate.
According to the government, the increase is part of its commitment to improving the welfare and living conditions of retired public servants in recognition of their years of dedicated service to the state.
The council noted that the approval reflects Governor Namadi’s resolve to strengthen social protection for pensioners and ensure they enjoy improved living standards amid prevailing economic challenges.
He said the pension review is part of the present administration’s commitment to responsible and people-centred governance.
The approval comes alongside other key decisions by the council, including emergency relief for victims of the recent rainstorm, solar-powered electrification of four state health facilities, and the procurement of vehicles and ICT equipment to improve education administration across the state.
