Abia State Government has faced criticisms after flood wreaked havoc in Owerinta, Isiala Ngwa South local government area.
The flooding happened along an ongoing Owerrinta Road reconstruction project being executed by the Abia State government.
However, speaking on the incident on Sunday morning, the State’s Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said that the situation was recieving the State government’s attention, assuring that the situation would be adequately addressed.
Kanu reacted to a trending social media post attributing the flood to alleged shoddy job executed by the State government’s contractor.
He said that preliminary observations indicated that the affected location has a long-standing topographical challenge arising from its sloppy natural terrain.
He acknowledged that the ongoing road construction by the Abia State government temporarily amplified the flooding challenges.
“The compound sits on a downward slope from the main road, a condit that has historically made it susceptible to water accumulation during periods of heavy rainfall.
“Residents and those familiar with the area can attest to the fact that the location has experienced flooding over the years, although the ongoing reconstruction works have temporarily amplified the situation,” he said.
The Commissioner, who said that the State government was dualising the Owerinta road to improve quality of life and safety, said that the flooding incident should not be politicized.
