ADC chieftain urges Tinubu to resign over insecurity

By Demola Akinyemi

ILORIN — A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kwara State and former Nigerian Ambassador to Japan, Prof. Gana Isa, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign, alleging that the administration has failed in its constitutional responsibility to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Wednesday, Isa said the Federal Government should relinquish power if it could no longer effectively address the country’s security challenges.

According to him, Nigeria requires committed and patriotic leadership capable of restoring security and tackling the growing threats of kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes.

He urged the government to demonstrate greater commitment in confronting insecurity, arguing that the challenge should be treated with the urgency it deserves.

Isa questioned the effectiveness of the country’s security architecture in the face of persistent attacks across parts of the country and called for stronger support for regional and community-based security outfits, including forest guards and vigilante groups.

He alleged that insecurity had spread across the country and criticised what he described as the government’s approach to dealing with armed groups.

“The government should be more serious about tackling insecurity. We need leadership that is committed to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians,” he said.

The former Kwara State Deputy Speaker and Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources also commended the efforts of forest guards, vigilantes and other local security outfits, saying they had demonstrated commitment despite limited funding and inadequate equipment.

According to him, these groups should receive greater government support to enhance their operations.

Isa further observed that incidents of kidnapping and banditry appeared to decline during periods of political party primaries and elections, urging Nigerians to critically examine the country’s security situation.

The Federal Government has repeatedly stated that it is committed to combating insecurity through ongoing military operations, enhanced intelligence gathering and collaboration among security agencies.
