The Anambra Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has commenced the dredging and clearing of the Ikenga Waterway in Awka as part of the Anambra State Government’s flood control and environmental management initiatives.
The waterway, which drains into the Ezu River through Agu Awka in Awka South Local Government Area, is being reopened to improve drainage and reduce flooding in the state capital.
Speaking on the project, the Managing Director of ACTDA, Ossy Onuko, said the intervention involves the deployment of a swamp buggy to dredge the channel and remove debris and other obstructions impeding the natural flow of water.
According to him, the exercise is aimed at restoring the capacity of the drainage system to efficiently convey stormwater, particularly during the rainy season, as part of efforts to address recurring flooding and erosion in the capital city.
Onuko said the initiative is expected to improve the free flow of stormwater, reduce flooding, minimise erosion, and protect lives, property and critical public infrastructure.
He noted that the intervention reflects the Soludo administration’s commitment to sustainable urban planning, environmental protection and the development of resilient infrastructure across the Anambra Capital Territory.
“The Soludo administration has commenced dredging and clearing the Ikenga Waterway, which drains into the Ezu River through Agu Awka, as part of ongoing efforts to improve environmental management and reduce flooding in the capital city.
“Using a swamp buggy, ACTDA is dredging the channel and removing all obstructions blocking the natural flow of water. This effort will improve the free flow of stormwater, lessen flooding, decrease erosion, and protect lives, property and public infrastructure,” Onuko said.
