Argentine Footballer’s Wife, Two Children Confirmed Dead In Venezuela Quakes

Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo, who plays for Venezuelan second-division club Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira, has lost his wife and two children in last week’s devastating earthquakes, the club confirmed Sunday.

Trejo, 38, was at a team training camp in Caracas when the two quakes struck. He immediately traveled to his beachfront home in La Guaira, one of the hardest-hit areas, where he spent three days searching through rubble for his wife Yanina and their children Aarón and Ainhoa.

His brother-in-law Ricardo Ardiles told CNN Español on Friday that Trejo was “emotionally overwhelmed” and that “absolutely nothing” remained of the family’s home.

The search ended Sunday when the club announced the deaths in a social media post, stating it “deeply mourns the irreparable loss” of Trejo’s family.

The U.S. Geological Survey described the event as a rare “doublet,” with two major earthquakes striking 39 seconds apart. Authorities have reported more than 1,400 deaths and thousands missing.

The disaster also claimed the life of 18-year-old footballer Yimvert Berroteran, who recently played for Venezuela’s U-20 national team and participated in the U-17 World Cup in Doha, according to the Venezuelan Football Federation.
