The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ibadan Zone, has appealed to the Governors of Oyo and Kwara States, Seyi Makinde and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to commence the full implementation of the signed 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement in their respective state-owned universities from July 2026.

The union warned that any further delay in implementing the agreement would inevitably plunge the affected institutions into a major industrial crisis, stressing that its members have already commenced mobilisation for an indefinite strike.

The appeal was made on Tuesday during a meeting of the ASUU Ibadan Zone, held at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUE), Oyo.

The zone comprised the University of Ibadan, Ibadan; University of Ilorin, Ilorin; Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso; Osun State University, Osogbo; Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete; and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo.

The union specifically called for the immediate implementation of the agreement at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo; Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso; and Kwara State University, Malete.

ASUU maintained that the continued failure of the Oyo and Kwara State Governments to implement the agreement has subjected its members to severe hardship, leaving them unable to adequately meet their personal and family obligations amid Nigeria’s harsh economic conditions.

Speaking through the Zonal Coordinator, Professor Biodun Olaniran, ASUU Ibadan Zone said the patience of its members had been exhausted after waiting for the governors to act.

While commending the Governing Councils of the affected state universities for their efforts, the union accused the two governors of treating its members unfairly by failing to provide the financial support required for the full implementation of the agreement.

“It is provocative and unjust. Our members in these institutions are being shortchanged by the Governors and Visitors of Oyo and Kwara States, who have failed to provide the financial backing required for full implementation of the signed agreement.“

“However, the role of Governing Councils of these State Universities must be commended for their efforts to address the implementation of the agreement.”

According to him, the union has “commenced full mobilisation for a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike, in response to the persistent failure of the State Governments involved to honour the Agreement.”

Professor Olaniran said the zone viewed the continued refusal to implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement in the three universities with serious concern and issued clear demands to the affected state governments.

“The next salary of our members in these universities must reflect the CATA component and all other allowances stipulated in the Agreement; all accrued arrears from January 2026 must be paid in full, without delay.“

“We state, with all sense of responsibility, that any failure or further prevarication by the State Governments will inevitably provoke a total, comprehensive, and indefinite industrial action.”

The union further appealed to the Governors of Oyo and Kwara States to act without delay before the universities are shut down, adding that: “The only path to lasting harmony is the immediate and full implementation of the Agreement.”

The union also expressed sympathy with the Oyo State Government, parents and families of all citizens affected by insecurity across the state and the country.

It called for a comprehensive review of existing security arrangements and stronger measures to safeguard vulnerable communities.

ASUU added that: “Education thrives best in an atmosphere of peace and security.”
