CSO Urges FG, IGP To Prevent Violence Ahead Of Osun Governorship Poll

A coalition of civil society organisations has urged the federal government and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to take urgent steps to prevent violence in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Good Governance alleged that some political actors were sponsoring unrest in the state to create conditions that could lead to the declaration of a state of emergency and the removal of Governor Ademola Adeleke from office.

Addressing journalists in Lagos, the coalition’s convener, Comrade Declan Ihekaire, claimed that recent disturbances in the state were politically motivated and intended to trigger federal intervention.

According to him, such a move would undermine democratic governance and provide an electoral advantage to the opposition.

“We unequivocally condemn this anti-democratic scheme. We stand firmly with the people of Osun State and with constitutional democracy,” Ihekaire said.

The group alleged that political thugs had recently invaded motor parks in parts of the state, attacking residents, disrupting commercial activities and creating fear among the populace.

It warned that any attempt to instigate violence ahead of the election must be resisted, urging the federal government not to allow political interests to plunge the state into a constitutional crisis.

The coalition also appealed to security agencies to remain neutral, professional and proactive in maintaining law and order.

“To the Nigeria Police Force and other security institutions: Return to the path of neutrality, protect citizens, not political sponsors,” Ihekaire said.

The group further warned that individuals or groups found sponsoring violence would be held accountable.

“We are documenting names, faces and evidence. Anyone involved in the orchestration or execution of violence against innocent citizens in Osun State will be held accountable. We will pursue every lawful avenue to ensure justice,” the coalition stated.

Also speaking, Comrade Funmi Jolaade Ajayi, noted that women and children are often the worst victims of election-related violence and appealed to political actors to allow peace to prevail.

Another member of the coalition, Comrade Edefe Ogenebowen, called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure that security agencies conduct themselves professionally and guarantee a peaceful and credible election.

He said although the Inspector-General of Police had visited Osun recently, developments in the state suggested the need for greater vigilance to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

“We urge all stakeholders to shun violence because, after the elections, the consequences may become difficult to contain. Nigeria does not need another security crisis. The federal government should ensure that peace prevails in Osun State,” he said.
