AC Milan legend Andrea Pirlo is on the verge of becoming the new head coach of Italy’s national football team.
According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Italian Football Federation contacted Pirlo on Friday and offered him the chance to take charge of the national team on a four year contract. Discussions are said to be progressing well, with the former midfielder now the favourite to land the role.
Pirlo, who enjoyed a successful playing career with clubs such as AC Milan and Juventus, has also worked as a coach in Italy. If appointed, he will be expected to rebuild the national team and guide them back to success in international competitions.
The federation turned to Pirlo after Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti reportedly declined offers to become Italy’s next coach.
