Manchester United have confirmed the proposed location of their new 100,000-seater stadium, marking another major step in the club’s ambitious plan to build what is expected to become the largest football stadium in the United Kingdom.
The club announced in an official statement on Thursday that the new stadium will be built about 350 metres north-west of the current Old Trafford, placing it at the heart of a new Stadium District within the wider Trafford Wharfside regeneration project.
The announcement follows United’s confirmation a few weeks ago that they had secured most of the land required for the project, paving the way for the next phase of development.
According to the club, the new ground will serve as the flagship of an extensive masterplan aimed at transforming the Trafford Wharfside area into a year-round destination for sport, entertainment and community activities.
Manchester United said the proposed location would allow the club to preserve the traditions and matchday atmosphere associated with Old Trafford while providing the space and infrastructure needed for a world-class stadium.
“The publication of the Wharfside Masterplan marks another significant milestone in our journey to create a new world-class home for Manchester United at the heart of a vibrant and transformational district for Trafford and Greater Manchester,” said Collette Roche, Chief Executive of New Stadium Development.
“The proposed stadium site is ideally located alongside Old Trafford, enabling us to preserve the heritage, traditions and matchday rituals that are so important to our supporters, while also providing the connectivity and infrastructure required to deliver a truly world-class fan experience.
“We are committed to building a world-class stadium with our supporters, not simply for them. Atmosphere, affordability and accessibility will remain at the heart of our plans.”
The wider Trafford Wharfside masterplan, published by Trafford Council and backed by the Old Trafford Regeneration Mayoral Development Corporation, Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Transport for Greater Manchester, includes new transport links, improved rail connectivity, cycling and walking infrastructure, 15,000 homes and an estimated 48,000 jobs.
The development is projected to contribute about £7.3 billion annually to the UK economy once completed.
Manchester United also confirmed that no decision has yet been taken on the future of the existing Old Trafford stadium, while supporters and other stakeholders will be consulted as plans for the new venue progress.
The club is expected to continue playing at Old Trafford during construction of the new stadium.
