Neymar Frustrated By Bit-Part World Cup Role, Says Ancelotti

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has admitted Neymar is frustrated by his limited involvement at the 2026 FIFA World Cup but praised the veteran forward for remaining professional and committed to the team’s cause.

Brazil’s all-time leading scorer has featured only once in the tournament, coming off the bench for the final 14 minutes of the Seleção’s 3-0 victory over Scotland during the group stage.

The 34-year-old is expected to start Sunday’s Round of 16 clash against Norway at the MetLife Stadium on the substitutes’ bench once again.

Speaking to Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo, Ancelotti acknowledged Neymar’s disappointment while commending his attitude.

“He’s not satisfied, but he’s behaving very well. He’s training very well. Neymar is very respectful, kind and loved by his team-mates,” the Italian said.

“He’s an important figure in the squad because of his quality, and he’s also a very humble person. I’m very happy with him. Obviously, he wants to play, as he always has.”

Neymar arrived at the World Cup carrying a right calf injury, raising doubts over his fitness. However, Ancelotti insisted the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward is now capable of completing a full match.

“The important thing is that he can play. No one knows how many minutes he will play. He has the experience to manage the game and its rhythm. When I feel the team needs him, I’ll put him on,” Ancelotti added.

Brazil face a stern test against Norway, a side they have never beaten in four previous meetings, having drawn twice and lost twice. The five-time world champions are also seeking their first knockout victory over European opposition at a World Cup since lifting the trophy in 2002.

“It’s always difficult, but we’re confident we’ll produce a good performance,” Ancelotti said.

“They’re a very well-organised team defensively and their coach has done an excellent job. We’re prepared for whatever happens. Even if we concede, we’re ready to respond.”
