Jannik Sinner cemented his status as the world’s premier tennis player on Sunday, overcoming a determined Alexander Zverev in four sets to successfully defend his Wimbledon men’s singles title at the All England Club.
The Italian top seed rallied from a first-set loss to secure a 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4 victory in a high-quality final that lasted three hours and 46 minutes—the second-longest match of his professional career.
German second seed Zverev, who arrived at Wimbledon riding the momentum of his maiden Grand Slam triumph at the French Open last month, started confidently and pushed Sinner relentlessly throughout the opening two sets. He clinched a tight first-set tie-break 9-7 after saving two set points, but Sinner responded emphatically in the second-set tie-break, taking it 7-2 to level the match.
From that point, Sinner gradually seized control. He secured the only break of the third set in the sixth game and carried that momentum into the fourth, where he broke decisively at 4-4 after a grueling 28-shot rally. Serving for the championship, the world No. 1 held his nerve and closed out the match with an ace.
The victory extends Sinner’s winning run against Zverev to 10 consecutive matches. He becomes the 10th man since the Open era began in 1968 to retain the Wimbledon men’s singles trophy. It is the fifth Grand Slam title of his career and his first of the 2026 season.
A star-studded Centre Court crowd, which included the Prince and Princess of Wales as well as Hollywood actors Nicole Kidman and Ben Stiller, witnessed the contest.
In his on-court address, Zverev—who will rise to world No. 2 on Monday following Carlos Alcaraz’s injury-enforced absence—joked with his rival before offering sincere praise.
“Jannik, I don’t really like you any more,” Zverev said with a smile. “But he showed once again why he is the best player in the world.”
Sinner, who collapsed to the turf in celebration before embracing his opponent at the net, acknowledged the difficulty of the battle.
“Sascha pushed me to my absolute limit today,” Sinner said. “I knew I had to stay patient and trust my legs. This one I had to fight for more than any other.”
