Tottenham Sign Fernandes In Record £85m Deal

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United for a club-record guaranteed fee of £85 million, the club announced.

The 21-year-old, who has one senior cap for Portugal but was omitted from their World Cup squad, becomes Spurs’ fifth acquisition of a rapid summer window. Contract length was not disclosed.

Head coach Roberto de Zerbi hailed Fernandes as a long-term tactical fit, citing his ball progression, composure under pressure, and defensive work rate. “Despite his age, he already has good experience in the Premier League,” de Zerbi said.

Tottenham outmaneuvered Manchester United, who balked at the all-cash fee without add-ons. The move hfollows a failed £100m bid for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali—though Spurs have since agreed terms with the Italian for the same sum.

Fernandes joins goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, defenders Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Jan Paul van Hecke at the north London club this summer.

“I’m very excited,” Fernandes said. “The head coach was a key part of why I decided to join. We look at football in the same way—going onto the pitch with fight and energy.”

The midfielder spent the last two Premier League seasons with Southampton and West Ham, both of which ended in relegation to the Championship.
