Barcelona and Spain great Xavi Hernández has revealed that his next managerial move could be into international football, admitting he would welcome the opportunity to coach at the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship, Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) or AFC Asian Cup.
The 46-year-old has been out of management since leaving Barcelona in May 2024 following a trophyless campaign. He believes taking charge of a national team would offer a better balance between his professional career and family life.
Speaking to Spanish broadcaster RNE, as quoted by beIN Sports, Xavi said he is keen to experience international football from the dugout.
“My next step could be a national team. I’ll say it openly – this could be a good fit,” he said.
“A club wouldn’t allow me as much time with my family. I’ve got young children. I’m keen to take part as a coach in a World Cup, the Euros, AFCON or the Asian Cup.”
Xavi guided Barcelona to the La Liga title and the Supercopa de España during the 2022–23 season, while he also enjoyed considerable success with Al Sadd in Qatar, winning seven trophies before returning to the Camp Nou.
During his spell as Barcelona manager, he oversaw 143 matches, recording 90 victories for a win percentage of 62.9 per cent.
Widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation, Xavi made 767 competitive appearances for Barcelona, a tally surpassed only by Lionel Messi in the club’s history.
On the international stage, he earned 133 caps for Spain and was a key figure in one of the country’s most successful eras, helping La Roja win the 2010 FIFA World Cup as well as the UEFA European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012.
He retired from international football after Spain’s exit from the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and now appears ready to embark on a new chapter with a national team.
