Colombia booked their place in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup with a deserved 1-0 victory over Ghana at Arrowhead Stadium, setting up a meeting with Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday.
Jhon Arias’ first-half strike proved decisive as the South Americans produced a dominant display, although they were left to rue a series of missed opportunities that prevented a more emphatic victory.
Ghana made a bright start, with Thomas Partey flashing a powerful effort narrowly wide inside the opening minute, but that early threat quickly faded as Colombia took firm control of the contest.
Both teams were forced into early injury-enforced substitutions. Colombia lost Jhon Córdoba to an apparent groin problem, with Luis Suárez introduced in his place, while Ghana replaced the injured Marvin Senaya with Alidu Seidu.
The breakthrough came in the 14th minute when Suárez made an immediate impact. The substitute showed determination to keep the ball alive on the right before delivering a cross for the unmarked Arias, who calmly guided his finish beyond goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi.
The goal left Ghana, who had managed only two goals during the group stage, with a mountain to climb.
Colombia continued to dictate possession and created several openings with their fluent attacking play. Luis Díaz squandered an excellent chance to double the lead in the 39th minute, dragging his effort wide after finding space inside the penalty area.
Ghana survived another scare in first-half stoppage time when Ati Zigi produced an outstanding save to keep out Johan Mojica’s powerful downward header.
The statistics at the interval underlined Colombia’s superiority. Ghana failed to register a single shot on target and completed fewer than half the number of passes managed by their opponents, yet remained only one goal behind.
Colombia maintained their dominance after the restart but struggled to convert their chances. Díaz had a goal ruled out for offside before firing another effort straight at Ati Zigi, while Juan Quintero also went close with a fierce strike that flashed narrowly wide.
Despite their wastefulness in front of goal, Colombia were rarely troubled defensively, restricting Ghana to no shots on target throughout the match.
The narrow victory was enough to send the South Americans into the knockout stage, where they will face Switzerland, while Ghana’s World Cup campaign came to an end after a disappointing attacking display.
