A 46-year-old electrician, Stephen Kwasi Anim, has been remanded into prison custody by the Asante Abuakwa Circuit Court after being accused of defrauding six people under the guise of securing overseas employment opportunities.
According to prosecutors, Anim, who is based in Adenta, allegedly used TikTok to advertise lucrative job opportunities in Austria and the Netherlands, promising to assist interested applicants with travel documentation and employment processing.
The complainants, made up of five nurses and one self-employed individual from Asuofua in the Ashanti Region, reportedly paid a combined total of GH¢70,000 to the accused after believing his promises of facilitating their travel abroad.
However, after receiving the money, Anim allegedly failed to deliver on his promises and reportedly went into hiding. The victims, who became suspicious after months without progress on their applications, are said to have launched their own investigations, which eventually led to his arrest.
The case was subsequently brought before the Asante Abuakwa Circuit Court, where the accused was remanded into prison custody pending further legal proceedings.
The incident has reignited concerns over the growing number of online job scams targeting Ghanaians seeking employment opportunities abroad. Authorities have repeatedly advised the public to verify the authenticity of recruitment agencies and overseas job offers before making any payments.
