An indigenous company, MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited, has proposed a $145 million solar manufacturing plant in Abia State under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement with the state government.
The proposed facility will be located at Umuelele in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
Speaking during a visit to Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia, the leader of the investor delegation, Oko Jaja, said the project is being developed in collaboration with Chinese technical partners.
He attributed the investment decision to what he described as the state’s improving business environment and commitment to infrastructure development.
Jaja disclosed that the first tranche of funding for the project is expected to be released in September 2026, paving the way for construction to begin.
Responding, Governor Otti welcomed the proposal, describing it as a vote of confidence in the state’s economic prospects and investment climate.
He assured the investors of the government’s commitment to providing the necessary support to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
“I’m glad you have reached the final investment decision involving about $145 million. This is what we stand for, creating an enabling environment for businesses to grow and for investors to thrive,” the governor said.
Chief Executive Officer of MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited, Dennis Nwakanma, said representatives of the company’s foreign technical partners had recently inspected the project site as part of preparations for construction.
He said the factory would produce solar panels and related equipment while creating employment opportunities and promoting skills development among young people.
According to him, selected workers will also receive advanced training in China as part of efforts to build local capacity in solar manufacturing.
He added that the project is expected to strengthen renewable energy production and position Abia as a hub for solar technology manufacturing in Nigeria.
