Nigerian singer Olawale Ashimi, popularly known as Brymo, has launched a fresh attack on fellow musician Burna Boy, questioning the value of his Grammy win and claiming that international music accolades can be purchased.
Speaking on the latest episode of the NotJustOk podcast, Brymo responded to a 2023 freestyle where Burna Boy used the line, “Hustle make you no fall off like Brymo.” Brymo expressed surprise that an artist of Burna Boy’s international status would release what he described as a “mediocre” sub, adding that he must be highly important to still be on the Grammy winner’s mind.
The “Ara” hitmaker went on to downplay Burna Boy’s global achievements, alleging that major music awards are often bought rather than earned based on merit. To back up his claims about industry corruption, Brymo alleged that he had personally been approached to buy an international award in the past.
“I’ve been told to pay $10,000 for a BET Award before,” Brymo revealed during the interview.
Turning his attention back to Burna Boy, the singer challenged his core musical talents, questioning his live performance, songwriting, and vocal abilities.
“You won a Grammy, and so what? It was bought now. Who’s your mate? Can you perform, can you write, can you sing?” Brymo asked. He further declared that Burna Boy’s name would never appear in any of his songs.
Representatives for Burna Boy and the BET Awards have not yet responded to the allegations.
